Fwd: On Northern Tour
So I sent this to the wrong address a week ago and now I'm back. I'll
post it anyway.

Tomorrow morning we all leave on Northern Tour, during which we'll be
visiting many ancient historical sites. It's a terrific, if tiring,
trip and I hope to tell you some about it. Unfortunately, I will
probably not have any access to e-mail for the next week as a result.
I'll try to write more soon. For now though I've just managed to keep
really busy. That and I started reading a book in some of my free
time, which is a sure way to kill my drive to do anything else. I
think I'm actually going to have to try to read less, I'm just so
unproductive when I am reading. That's it for now, if I haven't
written back to you about something yet, I probably won't for a week.
Hope all is well with y'all.
Here's a little bit I wrote yesterday to a friend from the ranch I
worked at last year:
So far it's been a great job, and I'm thrilled to be back in the
country. I haven't had a whole lot of opportunities to get out of the
center where I live and the program is housed, but today we all
(students and assistants alike) have the afternoon free, which has
given me the opportunity to get into Kandy-town (the downtown of the
city, which is fairly big, but not huge, most of the city's
population, including us, lives in outlying villages). It's been
great, I've got some good pants for the trip north, a new pair of blue
jeans, a hair cut, and now I have a chance to spend a couple hours in
the middle of the day taking care of e-mail and doing other stuff
online. Getting away from the program center and the students has
also given me the opportunity to interact with people in the street,
the people who were selling me pants, and it's so much fun. They're
all very friendly, impressed that I can speak the language, willing to
teach me more, relaxed and talkative, it's great.
